Cosmetic Vaginal Surgery Q & A

What is a labiaplasty?Cosmetic Vaginal surgery

A labiaplasty is a surgery to change the shape or reduce the size of your labia minora or labia majora. The procedure targets either the inner or outer lips of the vagina.

Am I a candidate for a labiaplasty?

If you have excessive labial tissue or unevenness between the sides, a labiaplasty may be in order. These issues can cause:

  • Irregular clothing fit
  • Poor sexual sensation
  • Self-consciousness during intimacy
  • Discomfort when riding a bicycle or participating in other athletic activities

The excess tissue may twist or tug. You may just feel self-conscious about your vagina’s appearance.

What should I expect during a labiaplasty?

Bergenfield Gynecology & Wellness may recommend one of two surgeries to correct your labia. A trim labiaplasty involves removing excess tissue and sewing up the area. A wedge procedure involves removing a pie-shaped piece of tissue. This procedure allows the doctor to maintain a natural border after the tissue is removed and reduce extra folds in the clitoral hood, too. The Doctor will recommend the type best for your goals and needs.

If you need surgery on the hair-bearing area of the labia, the Doctor removes two small crescents of skin from each side, near the inner portion of the lips.

What is vaginal tightening?

Vaginal tightening surgery, or vaginoplasty, is a surgical procedure that tightens the vagina. If you have significant vaginal laxity and radiofrequency treatments will be inadequate in resolving lax tissue, Dr. Finkelstein may recommend this procedure.

Women who benefit from vaginal tightening have stretched and separated tissue. This tissue may be so loose that a tampon falls out. Lack of tightness can lead to a lack of sexual pleasure for both partners.

During a vaginoplasty, the Doctor brings the separated muscles together and removes extra skin from the backside of the vagina. The external skin may also be removed to create a more aesthetic appearance.

What is recovery like following cosmetic vaginal surgery?

You need about one week of downtime following surgery. The staff at Bergenfield Gynecology & Wellness provides complete instructions as to how to care for the surgical site. You apply ice to the area to reduce swelling and pain. You may also need to elevate your backside to discourage swelling, too.

You need to refrain from sexual intercourse for 4-6 weeks. While the majority of swelling will reduce in a few weeks, it may take up to six months for all of it to go down.
